The Perrin TechniqueTM helps to improve the patient's health by aiding in the elimination of toxins from the patient's tissues, and their brain and spinal cord. By working on the patient's posture, the practitioner also helps to improve the function of the spine, and massage helps to relax tight muscles in the back and shoulders which in turn leads to reduced pain levels.
All CFS/ME sufferers appear to have upper back problems, either through previous injury or chronic postural strain. It has been suggested that the chronic stiffness in this part of the spine, coupled with high levels of stress, leads to irritation of the sympathetic nervous system with which this area is closely linked. The lymphatic vessels, which form the body’s natural waste disposal system, are eventually affected by the disturbed sympathetic nerves. The M.E. sufferer is left with a clogged and toxic lymphatic system, chronic muscular tension over the upper back and rib cage and poor breathing patterns.
Eventually backflow in the lymphatic system leads to accumulation of toxins in the central nervous system, as well as in the muscles. Dr Perrin has discovered physical signs common to all CFS/ME sufferers and these can be used to reach a definite diagnosis.
The Perrin TechniqueTM works by improving lymphatic drainage both in the body and in the brain. The treatment uses cranial osteopathy to stimulate fluid motion around the brain and other osteopathic techniques to improve lymphatic drainage in the spinal cord. Massage of the soft tissues in the neck, back and chest direct the lymph and the toxins it contains out of the lymphatic system and into the blood, where they are eventually detoxified in the liver. Meanwhile mobilisation of the spine and the ribs help to reduce stiffness, and allow the patient to improve their posture which in turn benefits their health.
The patient is also encouraged to take responsibility for their treatment, by following a massage and exercise routine at home. They are given advice about activity management and appropriate exercise levels, as well as dietary advice, which encourages a broad-based diet, while taking account of any food intolerances.
The Perrin Technique was developed following a discovery in 1989 during the clinical practice of osteopath Raymond Perrin. This system of osteopathic treatment alleviates many of the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, and its effectiveness has been demonstrated in two separate clinical trials.

No two M.E. sufferers are the same and treatment programmes have to be tailored to the individual needs of each patient. Recovery takes time with such a chronic condition but in each case full involvement in the regime is encouraged, as this will speed the recovery process.
